Air compressor questions, answered clearly
Practical guidance for KZN businesses planning, operating or maintaining an industrial compressed-air system.
Sizing and selection
Why is motor kW not enough to select a screw compressor?
Compressors with the same motor power can deliver different airflow at different pressures. Selection should use the manufacturer’s FAD at the required working pressure.
When does a VSD compressor make sense?
VSD is most useful where air demand varies meaningfully. A stable base load may be better served by fixed speed, or by a correctly sequenced combination of machines.
What should be included in a complete compressor package?
A complete system may include the compressor, air receiver, refrigerated dryer, filtration, condensate management, electrical coordination, ventilation and distribution piping.
How much receiver capacity is required?
Receiver sizing depends on compressor control, demand peaks, acceptable pressure variation and the application. It should be calculated rather than chosen only from motor size.
What information is required before ordering?
Confirm FAD, working pressure, power supply, ambient conditions, operating hours, air-quality requirement, installation access and future demand.
How often must a screw compressor be serviced?
Intervals depend on the manufacturer, operating hours and site conditions. Dust, heat and heavy duty can justify closer inspection even before the scheduled service hours are reached.
Service and reliability
What details should I send for a compressor service quote?
Send the make, model, serial number, service hours, controller display and clear photographs of the machine and previous service label.
Can you maintain compressors from different manufacturers?
Support is available for many common industrial brands, subject to model identification and parts availability.
What is included in planned maintenance?
Scope depends on the service interval but commonly includes oil, filters, separator elements, inspection, operating checks and a written record of findings.
Why does a screw compressor keep loading and unloading?
Possible causes include normal control operation, leaks, inadequate receiver storage, narrow pressure settings or a demand profile that does not suit the machine. The system must be assessed before changing settings.
Can compressed-air leaks materially affect electricity use?
Yes. Persistent leaks create artificial demand, longer loaded running and unnecessary energy cost. Leak identification and repair should be part of routine system management.
What should we do after a high-temperature trip?
Stop and allow the machine to cool safely. Check ventilation, cooler condition, oil level and ambient temperature without bypassing protection. Repeated resetting can lead to further damage.
Industrial systems
How is compressor size calculated for an industrial application?
List every air consumer, its pressure, flow, simultaneous use and duty cycle. Add realistic growth and leakage allowances, then select from verified FAD data.
When is redundancy required?
Redundancy is advisable when loss of compressed air stops production, affects safety or creates expensive recovery work. The standby strategy should match the consequence of failure.
How is compressed-air quality selected?
Air quality depends on what the air contacts and the sensitivity of downstream equipment. Dryer type and filtration should be selected from the required dew point and contaminant limits.
Why does pressure fall at the furthest machine?
Common causes include undersized piping, restrictive fittings, blocked filters, leaks, insufficient compressor capacity or inadequate receiver placement.
Should a factory use a ring main?
A correctly sized ring main can feed demand from more than one direction, reduce pressure loss and make future drops easier, but the layout still needs proper drainage and isolation.
KZN coverage
Which KZN industrial areas do you cover?
Coverage includes eThekwini, the western and outer-west corridors, Dube TradePort and the North Coast, Isithebe and Mandeni, Richards Bay and Empangeni, Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands, Ladysmith and Ezakheni, Newcastle and Madadeni, and the South Coast.
Do you attend sites outside the listed location pages?
Yes. The pages identify the main industrial nodes, but enquiries from surrounding KZN towns and operations are planned from the nearest practical service route.
Do you offer 24/7 breakdown support?
24/7 breakdown support is intended for contract customers. Other urgent enquiries are assessed according to availability, travel, safety and parts requirements.
Can you quote from photographs?
Photographs help identify equipment and prepare an initial scope, but a final recommendation may require nameplate data, operating readings or a site assessment.
